The Mundo Family - October

The Mundo family home is the first of the 12/12 Love Project, and is sponsored by the Bunso Family and Journey Church Jacksonville.

This family of 12 relocated to Magdalena for safety reasons. They are from a town about a 1.5 hr bus ride away, where gang violence, drug trafficking, prostitution, and rape are rampant everywhere. The dad/husband is a pastor of the only church in the dangerous town. He remains the pastor, but he rides the bus 3 days a week back and forth. He said he had to leave for fear of their lives. He makes 250q per month, which is the equivalent of $33.00, or about $1 per day.

The wife/mom's name is Teresa. She is a sweetheart. Her and Kerrie enjoy each others company, despite the language barrier. When we visit, she says over and over "this is a blessing from God...this is a blessing from God..." Another family here gave her a chicken coup to start a business, and she works hard at raising chickens and selling them to the local butcher. She also works in a fabric factory 2 days per week.

The Mundo's have 10 kids, many of which work in the factory, as well as helping raise chickens. They do not go to school because they can't afford uniforms and books. They do a lot of chores, and work full-days at the factory. In total, between the mom and kids, they are able to bring in about 600q per month, or about $80.00.

All together, this hard working family of 5 lives on just over $100 per month, or $3-4 per day.

My friend Pastor Mario told me that the Mondo's rarely, if ever, have meat with their meals. 2 tomatoes, and a small portion of rice is a typical dinner. It would not be uncommon for them to have only one meal per day.

The Mundo's are excited to meet the folks from Journey, who are planning their first trip for 2009 in March!
