Jorge & Sandra Velasquez

Jorge has been a member of the 12x12 Love Project construction team ever since the ministry started.  From the first time I (Brock) ever entered his home, I hoped that at some point we would be able to build a home for him and his wife, Sandra.

Towards the middle of the year 2010 I had talked to my wife Kerrie about my hope to build Jorge a home before the end of the year.  Then, during a one-week visit from our friends at Church on the Way, Lake City, FL, my friend (and the pastor) Dale Tompkins asked me out of the blue, "what kind of house does Jorge live in?"  Considering the fact that they had brought enough money with them to sponsor a home for a family, I took this as the leading of the Holy Spirit!

I told Dale about it, and after mentioning it to his team, they were 100% in!  When we all visited Jorge & Sandra to share the news, it was a very special time together.  I will never forget Jorge's response.  When he heard that this group wanted to build him a new home, his first reaction was to ask, "is it ok if you build it for my dad instead?"

Jorge & Sandra had been sharing their home with his father.  His dad lost his wife in 2010, as well as his oldest son.  It has been a tough year for their family, and in an act of complete selflessness, Jorge chose to defer this gift to his father.  When the team said that was a great idea, Jorge ran to get his dad.  The picture to the right is from that night, when we shared the news with Jorge, Sandra, and his father.

Construction began and Jorge had the priviledge and honor of building his own home.  During the construction, he shared some thoughts with me on video (below) that I was able to send to the community of Church on the Way.  It was a sincere expression of gratitude, and humble thanks as he shared how he never thought this day would come.

In addition to all of this, Jorge and Sandra were able to move into their new home just a couple of months before the expected birth of their first child!  Praise God this little baby will be born into a clean, warm home - as opposed to the torn down, dirt floor, mud and plywood construction of the old one.

In mid December, with a group of students visiting from Converge on Campus Ministries, we celebrated the completion of the home.  We prayed together, ate, sang, and hung out with Jorge & Sandra, and all of the 12x12 workers, giving glory to God for all he has done.

Thank you Church on the Way for blessing this special family, and giving a wonderful Christmas gift to a family in need in Guatemala!
