Thank you Stuart Schwadron, and our friends at Office Depot (specifically Nancy Accunto) for the recent donation to the kids at the Buena Vista school!
It was an incredible amount of school supplies. Notebooks, staplers, calculators, pens, pencils, paper, index cards, and much more. But it can't really be appreciated unless you know how poor this school is...
Many students don't attend school in the town of Buena Vista because they can't afford the basic supplies needed to attend. The school can't provide it because they can't afford it either.
Recently, there was a administration strike in Guatemala as teachers in the public school system were upset because they never received the basic supplies they needed to start school. This is a system where, simply, the poor are left out. There is no government funding, and the schools cannot do anything about it.
90% of all Guatemalans do not go to school beyond the 6th grade. It's a cycle that continues, passed from parents to their children, and it does not look to be getting better any time soon. Lack of education is the disease that infects generations of Guatemalans, and helps the poor stay poor.
We are grateful to have partners like Office Depot, who want to help these kids - who seem to have no hope - earn an education. One child at a time, we can make a difference!
