The Juarez Family

Mid-October, 2009:

We just celebrated the key ceremony for the Juarez Family.  So very appreciative, they had decorated their home with balloons and covered the floor in pine straw (something that is only done on formal occasions.)  They had also prepared fried chicken, rice, and salad for all of us!

What makes this story special is how the money was raised to build this house.  A youth group of teenagers from Lake City, Florida had heard about the 12x12 Love Project and the fact that $3,000 could radically change the lives of a family living in poverty.  That is when they began fundraising.

Over several months, and various different fundraisers, they had reached their goal – much faster than they had expected!  That’s when Jon Jackson, who leads the youth group, and his son Carter came to Guatemala to choose the family.

They visited several families, but when they met Ruth and her daughters, they knew for certain this was the family they were going to help.  Ruth is a sweet 21 year old woman with 3 girls (one age 3, and twin age 1.5).  The girls are always filthy, but you can hardly notice it because they are so precious!  Ruth is married to Juaqin, who works on a farm 7 days a week.

Their old home was a dark, tin structure with dirt floors.  Their fire burned 24 hours a day sitting only a few feet away from their beds.

Now they have a warm, block home with smoothly painted concrete floors, a front porch, windows, and a nice front door that locks!

Thanks to a group of teenagers from Orchard Community Church in Lake City, FL, this special family has a new home and a lot of new friends!  Praise Jesus!!!
