Eugenia's Family

We had seen Eugenia's house on several different occasions.  It looks as it the foundation is going to cave from underneath it at any given moment.  We had stopped by several different times, and no parents were ever home.  The kids would tell us they were working.

Another day, Gina (Schmidt, who works here with us) met Eugenia.  She told me about a woman who carries her handicapped child everywhere she goes.  Come to find out, Eugenia and her family lived in the very house we had been noticing.

The real draw to this family ended up being Lucas.  He is 5 years old and has never walked or talked.  He has a serious nervous system condition, and has very little control of his body.  It doesn't seem he can see or hear much.  Every once in a while there is a sweet moment where we feel as if he can see or recognize us.  Sometimes if you touch his face and speak slowly, he responds.

The house this family lives in is very dangerous.  The foundation is unsafe, and the house itself is a patchwork of wood, tin, and other materials.  Eugenia and her husband have 5 kids, the youngest of which is Lucas.

In general, they are a quiet and more standoffish family.  We believe our connection with them was clearly led by the leading of the Holy Spirit, and we are seeking as to what further role we may have with them and with Lucas. For now, we are celebrating with them as they finally are able to enjoy a safe and warm home, free from smokey air and dirt floors!
